International - Malaria Overview

Malaria has ravaged people's lives for centuries; today the burden falls disproportionately on children in tropical regions. Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through mosquito bites. Although preventable and curable, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates there were 229 million cases recorded in 2019, and 409 000 people lost their lives, two-thirds of whom were younger than 5 years and living in sub-Saharan Africa. The illness starts with symptoms such as fever, headaches, and chills and, without treatment, can progress quickly to severe illness and often death.

The International Avenue has been researching malaria, championed by Tony Thomas, and has included some information about this disease in an article via the attached link. In summary Malaria had some 229 million recorded cases in 2019 and 409,00 people lost their lives. Vaccinations have been developed over the past couple of years which are achieving good results and is being deployed in additional African countries during 2024. Please see the linked article for more information.
